Meet Woody

Curtis “Woody” Baird is a lifelong resident of Alexander City and is currently serving his first term as Mayor—his first elected office. After graduating from Benjamin Russell High School in 1976, he spent several years working in the mechanical trades before joining the Alabama Army National Guard at age 27. He served for twenty years in the 20th Group Special Forces, retiring in 2006. Following his initial Special Forces training, he earned an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Troy University. His nursing career included service in the ER, OR, and occupational health fields.

During his military service, Baird was deployed to Operation Desert Storm, Operation Uphold Democracy, and Operation Enduring Freedom. In 1998, he founded a retail firearms business, which he successfully operated for 23 years before selling it in 2022.

Baird is a certified National Rifle Association Training Counselor and has served as President of the Alexander City Shooting Club for over a decade. He currently sits on the Executive Board of the Lake Martin Area Economic Development Authority and serves as a board member for the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority, the East Alabama Regional Planning Commission, and the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce.

He has been married to Kimberly Peters Baird for thirty-three years. They have two children—both Auburn University graduates. Their son is a pilot, and their daughter is a registered nurse.
